Law Enforcement does not have to collect all the physical evidence or locate and preserve all video sources.
A scene investigation can find evidence overlooked by law enforcement after they have concluded their scene investigations. We have found bullets of another Calibur, skid marks, fragments of clothing, cigarette butts... the more time that goes by the chance of finding anything disappears.
Witnesses have a better memory of events close to when they witnessed an event.
The longer you wait to interview a witness, the more their memory can be distorted or overwritten by talking to others, discussing the case with law enforcement, or seeing it presented on the news.

2) Reputation: Check out their websites and online presence. Is it professional. If you Google their company name you should find multiple listings and their website. Check a few listings for reviews, and that others are not all complaining about them. Check to see if they are BBB accredited, members of professional associations, have been in business for some time.
3) Consultation: Call and do a case consult with a few companies to decide who is a good fit for your case and who you feel comfortable working with. Don't be high pressured into going with someone before checking more than one.
4) Contract: All investigators must have you sign a contract agreement that says how much they are charging, hourly rates, what they will attempt to do for you, and what type of report you will be given at case conclusion.
5) Payments: Most investigators get money up front from private clients and that is customary. You should get an invoice that matches what you were quoted in your contract. Often these are electronic where you can click and pay in a portal. Smaller firms may use an app like PayPal. If this is a domestic case, you may opt to pay in cash.
6) Report: at the conclusion of your case, they must provide a report of their findings. This can be done verbally, e-mail, or formal written report as specified by that type of case in the contract. Some reports are included in the fees paid, and others like a court ready report may incur an additional charge.
